MEC 3 FINAL REVIEW - RIBEIRO'S TEXT

6. “Keeping alive a tradition of medical service that reaches back to America’s origin, Dr. Roger Pelli provides medical care for Ashley, Maine, and five nearby communities on his own. These communities have a population of 2,600 [ guests  /  owners  /  callers  /  residents ] and cover an area of 1,600 square miles. The work is so [ difficult  /  defective  /  useless  /  offensive ] and the pay so low that, for many years, [ an  /  some  /  the  /  such ] area was unable to attract a physician.
In 1982, Pelli wanted to [ attend  /  assist  /  guide  /  experience ] medical school but could not [ continue  /  afford  /  help  /  serve ] it; he told these communities that, if they paid [ their  /  one’s  /  your  /  his ] way through school  he would sign a contract to come back and work [ for  /  with  /  as  / like ] their doctor for at least eight years. Fresh from the University of New England, Pelli [ returns  /  returned  /  will return  /  had returned ] and applied himself to his work with great dedication. Although Pelli is [ on  /  by  /  to  /  from ] call twenty-four hours a day and earns only $68,000 a year ( [ what  /  how  /  which  /  who ]  is low pay for a doctor), he plans to stay on when his contract expires. In the best tradition of his profession, he says, ´I couldn’t be more needed anywhere´. “
